Weighed Found Wanting

A mysterious hand writes unknown words on the wall: “You have been weighed, and found wanting.” The prophet deciphers it, the king falls.1 An angel’s hand touches a warrior’s hip, and it jumps from its socket—yet its owner receives a victor’s name.2 Man is defeated / man is raised. Reality check.

The medium is the material: glossy black enamel paint,3 moving off its support surface, cross-linking to draw out the narrative. At the center of this web, a religious image got stuck: a cheap aluminum Theotokos, evoking the riza-casing of a Byzantine icon. Object and paint are put through a trial by pressure:4 pointing forces the material through the figures’ empty silhouettes. The result: a dense, root-like paint outgrowth—“manually 3D-printed”—taking on the saints’ outline at the entry point (religious framing), only to cluster into a depersonalized, organic form. On the floor it lies sprawled out as spilled mass, off its leash (the medium is free).

Jacob wrestles a "man" until daybreak at the Jabbok. His hip is struck and dislocated; he won't let go until blessed. He receives the name Israel: "you have striven with God and men, and prevailed." (Genesis 32:24–32)

BLAEK – Old English word for quality black, versus SWART, the weak, matte black. Lőrinc Borsos uses it for the glossy enamel paint, an industrial standard that both absorbs and reflects light.

János Pilinszky, radio interview, 1979: “A piece of plastic – a ruined washbasin – is just as sacred as the Evening Star. [...] Plastic must be made more plastic, until it cries, and under the ordeal’s weight lets out a scream like the martyrs’.”

Lőrinc Borsos

Lőrinc Borsos is a fictional artistic persona that has been developed since 2008 by János Borsos and Lilla Lőrinc. Both studied at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. Their practice, grounded in the deconstruction of traditional artistic strategies and in collective and para-institutional approaches, connects the legacy of the Hungarian neo-avantgarde with contemporary media and technological transformations. Gradually moving from early painting to installation, speculative world-building, and alternative pedagogy, Lőrinc Borsos have realized a number of significant projects, including the exhibitions Nonentity (2016, ICA-D, Dunaújváros), For the Child of the Future (2023, Ferenczy Museum, Szentendre), and Narnia is a Lie (2024, Hessel Museum, USA). They are currently based at Art Quarter Budapest (aqb), where they maintain a studio and actively contribute to the institution’s activities.
