Before the World Believes

Cult is a pejorative term, used to describe a socially isolated group of damaged individuals drawn together by equally damaged epistemologies. But almost everything which most of the world now takes to be true was initially the thought of a socially isolated group of individuals, who were alone precisely because their epistemology was damaged. And this means that the hidden belief of almost every human being in the world is that a psychically broken understanding of reality contains the most truth. If there is no private language (Wittgenstein), then perhaps there is no truly private thought—which means that for a thought to survive, it needs to latch on to something outside it. The idea needs to start a family, or a cult.
